Cravings can be a fun part of pregnancy, like wanting something sweet or salty. For me, I’m craving salty and can put away McDonald’s French fries quickly, but my husband, who has a sweet tooth, misses my days of wanting something sweet. We have all heard the stories of husbands making late night ice cream runs because the mama to be MUST have that ice cream at 12 o’clock at night, but have you ever thought about why you crave certain foods?
Some believe hormones are to blame
With the increase surge of hormones pumping through your body, some pregnant women find it hard to stomach strong smelling foods. Food aversions can turn you off towards foods you normally enjoy, like chicken, but downing a jar of pickles or sucking on lemons may become something you crave. Sour foods can help alleviate nausea, which could be a cause for some cravings.
While others believe you are missing nutrients
It is said that a pregnant women craves foods that the body is lacking. If you are craving red meat, like steak, it could mean your iron stores are running low. Another example would be craving chocolate, which might mean you have a deficiency in magnesium. Dark chocolate is excellent because it contains magnesium. I’ve even read a study stating mothers who ate more chocolate during pregnancy have babies who smile and laugh more!
When your cravings get out of control and you feel you are eating too much junk, it’s easy to get the same nutrients from other sources. I’ve listed some healthy alternatives for some common cravings.
